Oracle VM: How To Backup And Restore A VM Guest (domU) Domain On Oracle VM 3.x (Doc ID 1477421.1)

Last updated on MAY 22, 2024

Applies to:

Oracle VM - Version 3.0.1 to 3.4.6 [Release OVM30 to OVM34]
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure - Version N/A and later
Private Cloud Appliance - Version 2.4.3 to 2.4.3 [Release 2.0]
Linux x86-64
Linux x86

Goal

Oracle VM does not provide a backup or restore function of Virtual Machine images. It is expected that customers perform such activity in the same way as for non-virtualised systems.

However, it can be more convenient to manipulate virtual machine resources that are actually files stored in an Oracle VM repository, as opposed to physical disks either dedicated to or shared by virtual and physical machines.

This document assumes that virtual machines will not be in any "powered on" state when such backup or restore operations are performed - i.e. "live backup" is not supported.

Backup of physical disks either dedicated to or shared by virtual and physical machines should be perfomed using appropriate utilities from within a virtual machine
