Oracle VM - Network Creation Fails With Error "VLANs over bond mode 6 (balance-alb) bridge interface are not supported as this mode is incompatible with VLAN bridge interfaces. " (Doc ID 1672862.1)

Last updated on JULY 16, 2022

Applies to:

Oracle VM - Version 2.1 and later
Oracle Cloud Infrastructure - Version N/A and later
Linux x86-64

Symptoms

Adaptive load balancing is often used to achieve redundancy of a network device (NIC) path. In the ifcfg-bondX file, this is done manually by setting a bonding option of mode=balance-tlb or mode=5. This mode is desirable because it does not require any special configuration of the networking switches.

Attempting to create a virtual NIC using this bonding mode causes the Oracle VM Manager to issue the error:

Manually overriding this will produce ARP packet errors; see Oracle Document Oracle VM Release Notes for 3.2, paragraph 8.4.9 "ARP Packet Checksum Errors" for more details.
