Oracle Linux: Server is not Booting Up After Updating GRUB2 with RPM command "shim-x64 is missing" (Doc ID 2722023.1)

Last updated on OCTOBER 27, 2020

Applies to:

Linux OS - Version Oracle Linux 7.1 and later
Linux x86-64

Symptoms

After updating the kernel and grub RPMs using rpm command, the server doesn't come up. It doesn't recognize the boot partition and tries to boot with next available boot device according to the BIOS settings.

In this case, the second boot device is a ISO from USB device. So the service is directly going to ISO boot. Server is using UEFI boot, not the legacy boot.

Reinstalling grub with grub2-install command in rescue mode also failed.

Changes

rpm -Uvh command ran for grub2 and kernel RPMs.
