Details

This document provides answers to frequently asked questions about the availability and support for Linux Containers (LXC) on Oracle Linux.

What is Linux Containers (LXC)?

The LXC feature is a lightweight virtualization mechanism that does not require a user to set up a virtual machine on an emulation of physical hardware. This feature takes the cgroups resource management facilities as its basis and adds POSIX file capabilities to implement process and network isolation. To learn more, visit Oracle Linux 7: Working With LXC.

Is LXC supported on Oracle Linux 8 or 9?

LXC is supported up to Oracle Linux 7. It's no longer supported in Oracle Linux 8 or 9.

What is Oracle Container Runtime for Docker?

Oracle Container Runtime for Docker allows you to create and distribute applications across Oracle Linux systems and other operating systems that support Docker. Oracle Container Runtime for Docker consists of the Docker Engine, which packages and runs the applications, and integrates with Oracle Container Registry, GitHub Container Registry, and Docker Hub.

Oracle Container Runtime for Docker is available on Oracle Linux 6 and 7. It's not provided in Oracle Linux 8 or 9.

To learn more, visit Oracle Linux: Oracle Container Runtime for Docker User's Guide.

What are Podman, Buildah, and Skopeo?

Podman, Buildah, and Skopeo are a set of tools that you can use to create, run, and manage applications across compatible Oracle Linux systems by using Open Container Initiative (OCI) compatible containers.

Podman is also intended as a drop-in replacement for Oracle Container Runtime for Docker in Oracle Linux 8 and Oracle Linux 9, so the command-line interface (CLI) functions the same way if the podman-docker package is installed. To learn more, visit Oracle Linux: Podman User's Guide.

What are the availability and support positions for those container runtimes?

The following table clarifies the availability and support positions of LXC, Oracle Container Runtime for Docker, and Podman, Buildah, and Skopeo:

Standalone Container Runtime Oracle Linux 6 Oracle Linux 7 Oracle Linux 8 Oracle Linux 9

Linux Containers (LXC) Yes Yes (sustaining support only) Yes Yes Yes No Yes No
Oracle Container Runtime for Docker Yes Yes (sustaining support only) Yes Yes No No No No
Podman, Buildah and Skopeo No No No No Yes Yes Yes Yes

What is Oracle Cloud Native Environment?

Oracle Cloud Native Environment is software for configuring, deploying, updating, and upgrading infrastructure for running cloud native applications. It is based on open standards, specifications, and APIs defined by the Open Container Initiative and Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF), including a CNCF-certified Kubernetes module, container runtimes, service mesh, storage, networking, observability, and diagnostics.

Oracle Cloud Native Environment has integrated container runtimes to create and provision Open Container Initiative (OCI)-compliant containers using CRI-O, an implementation of the Kubernetes CRI (Container Runtime Interface) to enable using Open Container Initiative compatible runtimes.

Visit Oracle Cloud Native Environment to learn more.

Actions
