How to Add Checkboxes to a Supplier Contract Document

We have a source document that contains an exhibit with checkboxes. These have been implemented in the XML document using Microsoft Word 2010 content controls (the checkbox control). The content control is inserted in the section correctly and can be saved/retrieved in a MS Word XML document. However, when checking the section into the Supplier Contract Management module, it appears to be corrupting the content control. When the section is previewed, the content controls show up as upside down question marks.
