Solaris Operating System - Version 8.0 and later
All Platforms

Attempting to install Solaris fails with the message "cannot open kernel/sparcv9/unix" or “cannot open kernel/unix”.

The message may be encountered while attempting to install the Solaris Operating Environment from the cdrom / dvd media or a JumpStart/network install.
The most common cause of this error is that the Solaris version is not supported on the machine.

The below example is from a Sun Fire V210 after booting from Solaris 9 12/02 installation media:

boot: cannot open kernel/sparcv9/unix
Enter filename [kernel/sparcv9/unix]:

Note: On systems where the 32 bit kernel is supported, the error will not include sparcv9 in the path.

boot: cannot open kernel/unix
Enter filename [kernel/unix]:
