Symptoms

Attempting to install Solaris fails with the message "cannot open kernel/sparcv9/unix" or “cannot open kernel/unix”.

The message may be encountered while attempting to install the Solaris Operating Environment from the cdrom / dvd media or a JumpStart/network install.
The most common cause of this error is that the Solaris version is not supported on the machine.
