Oracle HSM (SAM-QFS): How to Grow an Offline Filesystem with Additional Metadevices or Data Devices, Using samgrowfs (Doc ID 1002022.1)

Last updated on SEPTEMBER 20, 2024

Applies to:

Oracle Hierarchical Storage Manager (HSM) and StorageTek QFS Software - Version 3.5 and later
All Platforms

Goal

As SAM-QFS filesystems fill, it may become necessary to add meta devices or data devices to your QFS or SAM file system.

The existing filesystem elements cannot change size after a 'samfs' type filesystem is built.

The details of all the filesystem elements, including their capacity, are stored in the superblocks of each filesystem element and cannot be changed. If changing any of the existing elements/luns of a filesystem, the filesystem will need to be rebuilt from scratch, using sammkfs and then restoring from a previously take samfsdump or qfsdump, depending on the configuration.

The only way to increase the size of an existing 'samfs' type filesystem is to add devices.

This document will discuss the use of the samgrowfs(1M) utility and how to do an 'offline' grow. It is a supplement to the information available in the File System Administrator's Guide and the samgrowfs(1M) man page.

NOTE: This document discusses 'offline' grow.  For information regarding the SAM-QFS release 5.X 'online' grow, see document 1339502.1 titled Sun QFS and Storage Archive Manager (SAM): How to online grow a shared filesystem
