Using *vi* while in single-user mode
(Doc ID 1002127.1)
Last updated on JUNE 13, 2023
Applies to:
Solaris Operating System - Version 8 6/00 U1 and laterAll Platforms
Goal
When booting up to single-user mode and attempting to make changes in "vi", one is confronted with the visual editor saying:
I don't know what kind of terminal you are on - all I have is 'unknown'.
[Using open mode]
"your_filename" 8 lines, 67 characters
It then gives a one-line-at-a-time view of the file, making it difficult to edit.
This happens using "vi" when booted to CDROM or from a network server in single user mode.
