Solaris Live Upgrade: luupgrade fails with "path </a> is not a directory" (Doc ID 1003732.1)

Symptoms

When running luupgrade using the cdrom as a source it fails with:

ERROR: path is not a directory
ERROR: mount point is not a directory
ERROR: cannot use mount point to mount icf file
ERROR: cannot mount boot environment by icf file
cat: cannot open /tmp/.luupgrade.tmp.5133
ERROR: Unable to mount ABE disk slices: < >.
ERROR: Unable to mount the BE
