Application Core Files (Files Called 'core') versus Kernel Core Files (System Crash Dump) (Doc ID 1007445.1)

Last updated on JUNE 13, 2023

Applies to:

Solaris Operating System - Version 8 6/00 U1 and later
All Platforms

Goal

Core files from applications need to be analyzed differently from kernel core files (kernel core files are a result of system panics).
Solaris application core files are called 'core', while a system or kernel core file consists of 2 files called vmcore.# and unix.#. In SunOS 4.1.x, system core files were called vmcore.# and vmunix.#

This document describes application core files, possible causes for them, and additional information which is useful for investigating their cause.
