Trying to Boot from HD/CD-ROM; Bad Magic Number, Wrong Magic Number, Error

Symptoms
When trying to boot from disk, cdrom, the boot fails with one of the following error messages:
- Bad magic number on disk label
- corrupt label - label checksum failed
- corrupt label - Wrong magic number
- Can't open Sun disk label package
- Can't open boot device
