Sun Update patchproxy (LPS) fails to download patches (Doc ID 1408393.1)

Symptoms

Trying to analyze or download patches with smpatch using the SunUpdate patchproxy (LPS) fails with the following errors:

# smpatch analyze
no patches required

# patchsvr setup -p https://updates.oracle.com
# smpatch analyze
[Fatal Error] :14:2: The markup in the document following the root element must be well-formed.
Parsing error , line 14, uri null
 The markup in the document following the root element must be well-formed.
Failure: MemoryPatchDBBuilder: Patch list version of null is malformed.

# smpatch download -i 147152-01
ERROR: HTTP Content-Length size undefined. Cannot derive size of patch to create.
 String index out of range: -1

# smpatch download -i 147069-01
The following patches were not downloaded:
        147069-01: Request to download update failed. Status code 500 returned. An unexpected error occurred inside the server that prevented it from fulfilling the request.

Changes

The problem happens since the move to updates.oracle.com.
