Solaris 11.1 SMB Server cannot join the Windows Domain with a long fully qualified hostname

Symptoms
The attempt to join the Windows Domain fails with the error of Unsuccessful:
# smbadm join -u Administrator subdomain.domain
After joining subdomain.domain the smb service will be restarted automatically.
Would you like to continue? [no]: yes
Enter domain password:
Locating DC in subdomain.domain ... this may take a minute ...
Joining subdomain.domain ... this may take a minute ...
failed to join subdomain.domain: UNSUCCESSFUL
Please refer to the system log for more information.
The /var/adm/messages file records messages such as the following during the join attempt:
Feb 19 14:44:01 hostname.subdomain.domain smbd[1796]: [ID 702911 daemon.error] smbns_krb: getting initial credentials via keytab (Preauthentication failed)
Feb 19 14:44:01 hostname.subdomain.domain smbd[1796]: [ID 702911 daemon.notice] Unable to bind to an Active Directory server (using the local host credentials)
The results of the hostname command will show a fulling qualifed hostname of some length exceeding 15 characters:
# hostname
hostname.subdomain.domain
