Please note that the update Release Notes include detailed information regarding Sun Ray Software 5.4, including the supported installation platforms.

Sun Ray Software

Sun Ray Software is a secure and cost-effective solution that delivers a rich virtual desktop experience for Sun Ray Clients, PCs, and laptops. It provides access to virtual desktop environments from nearly any location and dramatically reduces the complexity and operational costs incurred by traditional PC deployments.

New Features

The following sections describe the major changes since the Sun Ray Software 5.3 release. Many of these features require the Sun Ray Operating Software 11.1.1 release (firmware) to be installed on the Sun Ray Clients.  (Please also see SRS 5.4 Release Notes for details)

1.1.1. Platform Support

Table 3.1.1 of the Release Notes outlines the comprehensive list of supported installation platforms for Sun Ray Software, version 5.4.   The following new platforms have been added to this support matrix:

  • Oracle linux 5.8
  • Oracle Linux 6.3
  • Oracle Solaris 11.1

1.1.2. Remote Desktops

Section 3.1.3 of the Release Notes outline the complete list of supported remote desktop environments.   The following platforms have been added to this growing list, with the 5.4 release.

  • Windows 8
  • Windows Server 2012
Note: The video acceleration and smart card services features are not supported on Windows 8 and Windows Server 2012.

1.1.3.  Multimedia

Video playback using Windows Media Player has been improved when using Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 desktops on Sun Ray 3 Series Clients.  This improvement includes support for up to 720p videos in MPEG-2, H.264, and VC-1 video formats.

1.1.4.  Smart Card Services

  • Smart card services for Oracle Linux  - Smart card services for desktop clients are now avaiable on Sun Ray Servers running Oracle Linux.  Smart card services, such as smart card authentication, are provided through the PC/SC-lite API. The CCID IFD handler, which provides access to external CCID-compliant USB smart card readers connected to desktop clients, is not supported on Sun Ray Servers running Oracle Linux.
  • Windows authentication with external USB smart card readers - When using the Windows connector, external CCID-compliant USB smart card readers now get redirected through the Windows RDP smart card channel when using the -r scard:on option of the uttsc command. This allows Windows authentication with external CCID-compliant USB smart card readers.

1.1.5. User Experience

  • Audio output through PulseAudio for Oracle Solaris 11 and Oracle Linux 6 -The PulseAudio sound server is used to provide audio output for desktop client sessions when using Oracle Solaris 11 and Oracle Linux 6 Sun Ray Servers.

  • Dynamic session resizing - Dynamic session resizing allows the remote desktop to be resized automatically to fit the optimized size of your local desktop client session.

  • Screen rotation for Sun Ray Clients - This orientation configuration is used by the various screen configuration commands to help automatically provide the user the proper screen orientation.

  • Accurate listing of monitor modes - When using the xrandr command to view monitor information, only the supported dimensions for the monitor are listed and the information about the secondary heads in a multihead group is accurate.

  • Dutch/Netherlands locale for Sun Ray Software Administration GUI - The Dutch/Netherlands locale is now available for the Admin GUI. And all locales for the Admin GUI are automatically installed on the Sun Ray Server during the Sun Ray Software installation.

  • Touchscreen Displays - Certain touchscreen displays now work on Sun Ray 3 Clients and Sun Ray 3 Plus Clients
