Solaris Volume Manager (SVM) Commands metastat or metadevadm Hang or Not Complete also mdmonitor Failed with "Method or service exit timed out. Killing contract 81." (Doc ID 1598142.1)

Last updated on MAY 07, 2024

Applies to:

Sun Solaris Volume Manager (SVM) - Version 11.9.0 to 11.11 [Release 11.0]
Oracle Solaris on SPARC (64-bit)
Oracle Solaris on SPARC (32-bit)
Oracle Solaris on x86-64 (64-bit)
Oracle Solaris on x86 (32-bit)

Symptoms

1) Solaris Volume Manager (SVM) commands, metastat and metadevadm, hang or do not complete.

Running truss on the hanging metadevadm command:

# truss -aefdD -vall -wall -rall -ua.out -o /var/tmp/metadevadm-l-r.truss.out metadevadm -l -r

Shows that the hang occurs in the open() system call on file "/dev/.devlink_db".

Here is an abbreviated output from truss showing the point where the open() system call was hanging and then broken with a <ctrl>-C signal.

The SVM SMF service "system/mdmonitor:default" executes the "metadevadm -l -r" command, which is shown to hang in symptom 1 above.
