A guideline on how to setup tape devices on vSAN / vHBAs configurations running Solaris 11.3 SRU 7.5 onwards (Doc ID 2193249.1)

Last updated on OCTOBER 05, 2022

Applies to:

Solaris Operating System - Version 11.3 to 11.3 [Release 11.0]
Information in this document applies to any platform.

Goal

Since Solaris 11.3 SRU 7.6, MPxIO doesn't need to be disabled to recognize disk devices on a guest LDOM assigned to a vHBA. This known limitation was addressed on the fix of the following defect ( internal ):

BUG:20951004 - VHBA SHOULD SUPPORT HBAS WHEN MPXIO IS ENABLED IN SERVICE DOMAIN

However, the fix was developed exclusively for disk devices. This means, that if you're running Solaris 11.3 SRU 7.6 or better and you want to map tape drives on a vSAN, you still need to disable MPxIO on the fc ports where the adapters are zoned to. This is fixed on Solaris 11.3 SRU 21.

If the system cannot be upgraded to SRU 21, as a workaround, MPxIO can be disabled. This can be challenging on environments where the NPIV feature is being used in the vSAN configuration. The following example can be followed as a guideline on how to set up tape devices in such cases.
